Case Study: Heavy Construction Industry - 2009
Location: Alberta / British Columbia
Company: Dechant Construction Ltd.
Background: Dechant Construction knew an opportunity to increase revenues existed by using new technology. The development of an online field ticket and processing system was that opportunity and would replace a system it had relied upon for more than 30 years. The traditional system whereby a hard copy ticket is physically filled out, fuel surcharges added, the values totaled, consultant authorized and then faxed back to the head office for invoicing - comprises the entire revenue stream for their business. It was crucial they mitigate as much exposure to risk as possible.
Dechant Construction understood that if a single piece of equipment was missed, a sub contractor was forgotten, an arithmetic mistake was made or crucial information was not captured as required for invoicing - that they carried the risk of hundreds if not thousands of dollars a day in lost revenues and potential disputes. Over the course of a week, month and year this might have accounted for hundreds of thousands of dollars they couldn’t recover or even know was missing. Given the competitive landscape and downturn in the economy changes had to be made to ensure competiveness.
Challenge: The challenge was to design a system that would provide Dechant the flexibility to mitigate much of their concern with the process while systematically tracking, archiving and reporting in real time - revenues the company is generating. They needed a system to be friendly to use for foremen, field staff and office staff alike as well work online across even the slowest / most remote internet connection available. Their clients were of two camps – tech savvy vs. stuck in tradition - so the system needed to be able to authorize a field ticket using leading edge E-Signature technology and / or produce a hard copy for signature as required.
Solution: Fieldtik was developed to provide a user friendly, powerful, field ticket system that is intuitive and natural to use. The form has been web enabled using dropdown and auto-populating fields for quick access to company assets, the system does all of the calculations for you even accounting for fuel surcharges and sub contracted equipment.
Fieldtik has been developed to be used alongside of Topaz Systems e-signature tablets so capturing electronic signatures can be done remotely in the field in real time. The entire system exists online and the office staff sees the same data that the field personnel capture in real time. Using a simple restrictive permission framework each user of the system can be discretely limited to any single, multiple or entire components of the system. It really can safely be used throughout the entire organization.
Result: The result is increased revenues, greater profitability, more accountability throughout the organization and daily ownership of revenue generation by the most entry level positions in the organization. Management could reliably know at any given time that the expenses they occurred matched the revenues that were generated as well any disputes they once experienced with clients over invoicing completely disappeared. Dechant has become much more competitive, risk averse, and better equipped to move forward in the construction industry.
